Day 13 Journal - The EIR Journey

Internet is part of my life. It is a place where i can find informations almost anything i want. Videos, images and many more. I thought this subject is to teach me how to use the internet or maybe use a code name to search for better result information. But actually there is more. This EIR taught me how to use different search facilities for different types of search we want to do research on. The most important thing is these different search facilities gave different result but yet these information are useful to my relevent search. Just like Google Scholar has statistic and or Google Directory has different categories to link the information. And not only about search facilities, we were also taught howw to critic the website. This helps me to understand and check whether this website are up to date or whether this publisher is talking rubbish. With EIR, it helps me alot in doing my research easily and save a lot of time.

Tutorial 5-6

Using Wiki to share ideas and collaborate with other is meaningful because this shows that we are sharing our ideas or opinion about the related topic. it's more like a chit chatting corner where we express our opinion regardless correct or wrong. This shows that we are discussing this topic seriously and came out with a conclusion of our own. Although the information given may be wrong, which is why collaborating our ideas and share it among them is the best route to achieve the best result.

In fact still i will use wiki for my diploma. As my course needs to do lots of research on products, functions and many other stuff. That's why wiki is one of an alternative needed to do research. It's better if you don't understand but it's wrong if you don't understand and give a theory of your own.

Day 12 Journal

Didn't go to school for the day. cannot wake up on time but thanks to my group mates who brief me on what to do for tomorrow.... Cheers guys

Day 11 Journal

Today just gotten my test 2 10/20. worst than the first test. Although pass but it not up to my standard. Thanks to my hectic lesson this week but what done is done and there is nothing much to say. But as the subject is coming to an end, the lecturer told us that the portfolio submission, what to submit and I was chosen the group leader by Rachel without telling me. I got a surprise but anyway, group leader is just a name, more important is the group effectiveness.

Tutorial 3-4 Activity 2

Youtube is a website where people around the world upload through the internet and share it around the world. Not only video sharing, users can also upload, view and comment these video clips. Youtube is part of my life when i wanna look for entertainment, funny comedy show and soccer clips. When i am bored at home after rushing for my projects, this is the website i will go to to look for laughter.

In my life, without entertainment is boring. That is why youtube is part of my life. When people tells me about funny video, i will go to youtube to look for these sources. Plus youtube has also some online tutorial tesching softwares. It is more of like an online lectures with visual aids rather than black and whites wordings. Therefore, everyday when i switch my computer on, youtube is definitely a website which i will always go to.

When i am doing my project on a certain products, I need to understand how does it works, the user advantages and disadvantages. Most of the time, youtube has this sources where people introduce on this certain products. But not everytime you get what you want as these video are uploaded by people. But there are certain products that filmed by people on they using it. Which is why, Youtube is another source for me to understand how to understand product related item.

Finally had a dream holiday i want to go to. Of course it's free. Definitely i want to go to the beat ever 7 star hotel in the world. This is the link.

The length of the coverage is short but the depth coverage almost every facilities for those who are interested in. Day 10 Journal

Today the lecturer teach us about evaluating websites resources tools. Today website talks about checklist. In a checklist, there is survey and numerical rating tools. A survey is where people can access openly to take part. It is also an option to fill.

Numerical rating are like. rate through stars. E.g. 5 star is very good, 1 is bad. There are also website company which access the website. One of this website is call Kitemarks, This is the company to gives you an approval or seal. Similarity to a hawker center where they give you A, B, C.

Metadate is information about information in the website. There is a rating system for website which is also known as evaluating service. These are the keywords i learnt today and hopefully i can pass my test tomorrow. I need to brush up on Practical 8-9 now. This is the website that i am doing my critic on. http://www.helpguide.org/. Today, we learn about the evaluating the resources. Resources such as image and muti-media, database, current aware services , FAQ and FTP archive.

For the image and multimedia, What is the purpose and the coverage for the source. Is the text explained clearly. Imaged base may be an entire site that forms parts of a text-based sources information. Is it for commercial or academic? Is there a download option andwhat is the format of the file used. What are the types of the image? (2D, 3D)

Current awareness service. What is the purpose of the service? What is the coverage and the accuracy of it. Authority? The frequency of updates, time and relevancePresentation and arrangement- is it easy to identify the subject?

Ftp archive - What is the purpose and the coverage? Coverage – what software and data are available and are they available for different types of computers and platforms? Is it accessible? Is the mirror site and search function available? Is the download fast? Is there a quality control? Are there support services? Such as FAQ?

Advertising, sponsorship and other commercial information
What is the Purpose? is it to advertise? Authority – what is the motivation of the producers? And is the coverage wide?

Basically critic the website is to justify on the user on creating webpage. Cause the user might leads you to false information. Be careful.....

Practical 7 Activity 4

The purpose of this website is talking about funny jokes on Singapore news. This news includes the local current affairs and international current affairs in which people change the story to a more hilarious kind of jokes. This websites are targeting the local Singaporean to entertain them and it allows people to make fun of the government by posting harsh or even funny comments on the entry. They provided some pictures and post some hilarious comments base on the picture itself. And a flash related games for user to play and also to make fun of the Government indirectly. The breath of the news is quite funny and average but the depth are totally nonsense as they make up their story in most of the news. There is no author, date only from 2000 to 2003 and no organization on who started this website. They only declare themselves as a bunch of Singaporean to have a good laugh at Singaporean and its society. In fact, there is no quality control where user uses Singlish or a mixture of English, Chinese and Hokkien as a language written in the webpage for the better suit of Singaporean.

It features forum where people can share jokes and critic on certain news. Of course with the funny games and news about political Singaporean, it captures a lot of attention to me. And the news are funny, hilarious but a bit too overboard. This is a unique website to Singaporean compare to other website such as Formal website where Singaporean can comment freely, share jokes; make fun of the Singaporean life using their suitable language .All the article are accessible and the speed of accessing the webpage is quite fast and allows people to comment as long as they register for the forum for free. But in order not to destroy the government reputation, they declare that this website is not a political website and those who disagree with the website, they should leave.

I truly believe this website will surly be a top hit in Singapore and they change boring news into some hilarious jokes for readers not only in Singapore but also international.

Day 8 Journal

Today time is moving very fast as today the lecturer will go through lecture 6 7 and 8. Plus this Friday is test, we have to do critic and evaluation on the website and resources.

So we look at how these information can be evaluate. Before looking at the internet quality, we first look at the problem arise from the website.
Basic problems are similar information and irrelevance information. so we go in depth to these problem where too much information allows the user needs to click on the result and waste a lot of time to pick the sources he wants which is totally inefficient. Or some resources such as blogs are not useful as there is no formal authority to "police" the information in the internet or even no review process for most internet information unlike printed materials. Inaccurate information which is not updated or maybe upload by Tom, Dick or Harry which will harm the user to do their research instead of helping. Or sometimes, it may not even be updated frequently or even worse, it comes with a broken link. Or sometimes, there is a constant change on the webpage where the relevance search maybe remove or moved to other sources. Sometimes, you need to pay or require to download software to get full access to webpages. The website has a blending of entertainments, informations and advertising where user need to determine if informations provided is supplied by the advertiser.

What are the areas to look out for while checking for internet?
-The purpose of the website
-Access the coverage
-Are they in the position to put up the information e.g. doctor
-Make sure the information are current, not outdated
-Consider the accessibility e.g. log in password, register
-How well they present the information. Formal or informal?
-Compare the information on what you have suggested with other sources.
-And check the overall quality of the website.

For indepth evaluation on the webpage, different types of resources may require different criteria for websites. For the best one, rating tools is usually formed in search engine where the higher the people visited the website, the higher the rank would become.

And what are the evaluation criteria?
Puropose-Ask yourself why are the information is there and the true objective of it. Who is the target audience and take a look at the "About Us" Tab. "IBM- business and marketing information"
Coverage-What kind of materials they provide? Video and Graphic? And the range of coverage E.g." disease- wide range of heart attack add the in depth of it".
Authority-The publisher and the sponsor must be verify. Who are the board of director iin the webpage? How the citation- is it coded by other place? Or did they provide an avenue to contact them and how reliable are they?
Accuracy-Ask yourself is it collected from research and how reliable is it? Check for grammar and spelling error and any evidence of quality control.
Currency-Is the information up to date e.g."The straits times is updated every moning" Also check on how often is it updated?
Accessibility-Is the loading time fast? The language is it international and do we have the permission to write on them?
Presentation and Arrangement- Is it easy to read and does it capture your eyes? These search features more on visual usage.
Usability-Is there arrows to click? does it access the navigation of one screen to another search key.
Over quality-Compare with other source which one is better in terms of quality and how unique is the website you have chosen to be?

But the most important thing is different materials are mend for different reasons. The assessment of quality may differ from other. Bear in mind that.

How to check?
User will need to verify the authority and who are the people who post the article there. Whether the person who provide the link given are useful information. And of course Google search the web page and see how popular the website are.

How reliable and accurate form the people who are engaging in the discussion forum.
Any moderator? Is there anyone who referee the situations? and is the person qualify to participate in the forum. E.g.Doctor

Electronics, Magazine
Usually they have been reviewed and are often quite reliable.
When is the research done when you get the information?
How accurate is it or how often is it updated?

Database
More of abstract where user can find information if you want statistic.
The accessibility is when do you need to pay for it?
How fast is the download and will someone be there to help you if you need it?

Lastly, check for the organization or the "about us" before you start to do research and find the relevance sources

Day 7 Journal

Got my class test 1 done. 15/20 because of some silly mistakes. Not very good but will strive harder next time. Then we were told to do practical 6 which is the start of a new topic. Had a hard time using the sparks online as the system is slow but well, i still have to complete my practical.

ACADEMIC GATEWAY
Ok So here goes on my experience on using Sparks online, Academic Gateway and ITPRO.
When I click on academic gateway, it links me to this SJ library website. This website allows me to looks for catalogs on my research topic I am looking for e.g. books, video or PDF file. Within these catalogs, there is a few links where user can do a research online e.g. PDF. But for books or video, is more of a library source where user needs to borrow them from the library itself.



Gateway doesn’t allow Boolean for searching it webpage. So I had to use the keywords to look for the result. And only 3 results showed in the website. The link is not as relevance as the topic I am doing researching on. Overall, Academic is an online library source website where user can look for statistics, books and video regarding to the relevance topic you are researching on.



TP E'BOOK DATABASE
Using Boolean operator and keywords doesn’t give me any result relevant to my research topic. Base on this database, it looks like more of electronics technology and technical study database and nothing much on other topic about drugs abuse. Beside ITPRO, I also do a check on all collection and the same, nothing relevant to my research is found. The category shown in the webpage doesn’t have a topic related to drugs and my relevant topic.



SPARKS ONLINE
This is a wide range of useful websites where user is allowed to find journals articles from books or magazine and newspaper, on many categories on relevant search. The other category that I’m talking about is more of research on Health sources that link to drug abuse. This category also categories as keywords where it can be link to the database itself for more refine search. This journal is uploaded by people including in the sources with citation, abstract and statistics from a book or other resources. It is more of like Google scholar where user can look for relevance search and research paper and a more updated sources.





No the results are not the same. With different database, they came out with different results. But both searches are classified as journal articles with citation and abstracts from a book including the page number citied from or PDF. Both bases on the latest journal articles will be the top ranking of the page. And both allowed Boolean and phrases







Practical 6 Acivity 4

To me, using database to look for relevance topic is less effective than search engines and meta search engine. Because throuh my experience, the database i have chose to work on doesn't give me a good result base on the relevance topic " impact of drugs abuse on teens". It is more of a library source where people can find books on the relevent subject they want. The category given in the library sources are quite limited.

But regardless of lesser informations and relevence topic than other search engine, meta-search engine and directory, i will still use this database for my diploma. Cause arts contain alot of informations and more of indepth research with might not be able to find in the internet. Which is why the school library is there for us to study or read stuffs like how to draw better. And of course other art stuff related to my diploma.

Day 6 Journal

There was no lesson in class, just to finish up practical 4-5 and the lecturer will be there to assist us as much as possible. Tomorrow is the class test 1, a 20 questions MCQ.. We are required to study lecture 1-5 notes in the ole website. the lecturer also come out with the type of questions that will come out. A true or False question and the which one is correct "A & B or A & C" question. Will try to learn and put them into my brain. So scared for test as it was my first in many years plus it is graded which will reflect on my grades. So wish me luck.

Practical 4-5 Activity 2

Finally managed to add my group mates in the blog list.... thanks to my classmates. With this function, I can personally link my blog to my groupmates with a click away. This is so important as there will be conversation and interaction between us working as a group.

Firstly, as a group member, we had to help out with each other who had problems or trouble in their work. To assist them as much as possible. Try to teach them if possible. At the same time, understand their feeling or emotion as much as possible. This make the group work more cohesive, and makes our bond closer.

Sites feed personally lets me to plan for my works, time or friends in my way. Although emotions is secondary when comes to work, but understanding of each other is also a must. This site feed not only brings our work closer, but at the same time, brings our bond closer. As we can check on those groupmates reflection, understand how they feel, tell them about those mistakes they did wrong. And of course congrat them when they did a really good job.

Ok Enough for blog. Let's get to work. I would like to talk about the benefits of using different search engines. Actually the most importnat thing is with different search engines, you get differents result with junk or useful resources. But with those useful resources using different search engine compiled together, you get a whole large pile of research.

As i am doing a research on impact on drugs abuse on youth, I can use Google scholar to look for statistic, those professor writing and Full text in online research paper. If i want to look for image, forum discussion on drugs abuse, I will use a search engine for those result. If possible, use meta search engine for better result as it is a multi search engine where it helps to search all information in Yahoo and Google in just a single search engine. Using directory, you can find some pills related information, parenting related informations regarding to drugs abuse.
E.g. Impact on drugs Abuse categorise by > Parents > Teens > Drugs > pills > Doctor.
And these are the research you can find using directory.

Using all these difference search engine, you get different results which is good because different result can let you compare and investigate so that you can come out with your own theory after comparison. So this is the benefits i have using different search engines



Above are the result that i am searching for relevance topic using meta-search engine and subject directory. Both file size are small and topic are quite relevance to my research.

Day 5 Journal

Today the lecture told us the importance of the portfolio which is 80 percent of the course. Whereas the key is the Comparison and analysis of effectiveness of search facilities which already consist of 30 percent of the portfolio.

Let's talk about directory. Directory are human compiled meaning you might get less research you want through this engine.

Today, we started to learn about database. As the test is coming out soon, I shall post what is databass in this blog so as for those taking this subject will be able to see this and kept it in their mind.

Database are text pages, files or other often high-quality authoritative information available via the world wide web that general-purpose search engine cannot (due to technical limitaions), or will not (due to deliberate choice) add to their indices of web pages.

Database which are call invisible web are also know as deep web. Database informations usually comes from companies, newspaper, research paper and government and many more. The source of the informations are very wide but it is not free.

One bad things is that search engine cannot access to database but some company supply you with the search from the website just like the school http//spark.tp.edu.sg which has a search engine itself but not searchable by internet search engine.

Other example of Database which compile information for use are Lexis-Nexis or Ebsco. Each one is 1 company and are marketed by their own business source which has a gateway and some of these might have entry to all the database.

Day 4 Journal

As test is coming soon, the Lecturer emphasize on the up coming test, Lecture 1 - 5. Not only to remember what are the internet resources, But also know how to distinguish them.

As practical 3 is coming to an end, the lecturer also emphasize on doing well on this practical. Because the marks carries for this practical is 30 percent and consider the first part of my portfolio is complete. This practical will be send for the lecturer for review next week. So that the lecturer can check whether are you on the right track and there is time for us to touch up.

Tomorrow is learn about meta search engine, and i am looking forward to it. Today i am doing a comparison of Google and Google Scholar. Using Boolean and wild card will be something like this on my research. (impact OR effect*) AND (youths OR teens*) AND (drugs abuse* OR mishandle pills)

Practical 3 Activity 4

Actually, I am not that impress on Google features as i am using this search engine for many years. Features like blogs, maps, books, and video or image are the most common features. But the caches and similar pages are the most important functions as i can find the words or pages easily.And these functions can prove that whether the link provided is up to date. I am only totally impress by the Google Scholar where i can learn full text research without going to the library to look for those research. What i am totally impress is the Boolean and the wild card that can assist me in finding research relevance to my topic.

By participation in the forum, people will know that you are trying to give answers to questions, or finding answers to questions. These are the people who participate in the forum and that goes to me. Because sometimes, there are experts who like to share their experience on drugs abuse and tell the world in the forum how important or dangerous drugs is. While others who like to know more about individual drugs, or their own experiences can put up a question in the forum and ask people for help. Or even people discuss on how to prevent, how to help on a selected forum.

I feel that forum is People from worldwide discussing about the relevance topic they experience on and wants to know more. I personally do not feel anxious because when i really do not know the answer, I can post a thread in the forum hopefully people can enlighten me. Citation are very important because it is used when we are using phrases, pictures or video from a web sources. Therefore it is very important to cite and give credit to the person who provide you the source of information. Without Bibliography the source that does not belong to you is called plagiarism. This is consider taking things without others people permission also known as stealing. This can cost you your entire working life.

Day 3 Journal

This blog, firstly we recap about what we have learn. Compared different online marketplace. Evaluate the price, compare the search facilities and functions comparison. We learn about the website Boolean, wildcard (cent*). Is something like a maths formula.

Today we learn about directory. Just like in day 2 but more in depth. Directory are information that are in groups, it is hierarchy by topic and leads information to another. E.g. origami. Under directory you can find many things about it like how to fold, the material in origami. It breaks the search into many area related to origami.

the lecturer told us that some of the database that we use needs to pay money. As this is a way of how database earns money. the lecturer taught replacing key words with similar e.g. youth = teens. So that we can maximize our search result. We were also taught the difference of search engine and meta engine. Search engine e.g. Google are special where people can search for media, vidoes images which is known by the lecturer as spider. While Meta engine enable keywords search to be sent to different search engines at a go and then the results are shown together into a single page. This is also known as multi-spider.

Today, i have learn about the difference internet resources. let me go through them.... Information website are looks formal. Just like our school Temasek Polytechnic of even government website. Advocacy are more of peacekeeping, or website about foundations which had a strong opinion they are fighting for. Business website are More of promoting services or products. And some of the website even have a shopping cart. In news, it provide article on events, news and headlines.
Personal informations are usually informal. Because the creater itself likes to edit his own website his own ways with colourful background or beautiful texts just like a blog for example. Lastly for entertainment website are formal which provide MP3s, videos, games and lots of pictures.

Day 2 Journal

In the 2nd lesson, the lecturer told us that she likes to recap what we have we have learn in the previous lesson. That is good cause i can refresh for the upcoming test. What we have learn is the identify the purpose of the internet resources. It is to provide information, to advocate, provide current affairs such as news, for personal experiences and for entertainment.

The lecturer also point out those common mistakes we made while we doing research. As I am doing research on teens involving in drugs abuse, the keywords is DRUGS ABUSE, IMPACT, TEENS. For example, people just type drugs abuse..... Then it will leads to Drugs abuse on adults, women, men or even animals. So it is important to list out all the key words. This is the tips on doing research given by our lecturer.

The lecturer also explain that to improve search by using directory. Example, Yahoo directory, you type sports and websites about sports came into the directory. While using Yahoo, when you type sports, maybe a blog came out in the search with a quote saying "Mary and I went to the stadium to do some sports".

She also told us that most of the people doesn't familiar with the directory and are only familiar with search engine cause it was just 1 click away. This internet is so effective that I can use directory to do my research in a faster way and lesser time.

The lecturer also told us using " or even Boolean AND or NOT plus using() also helps to break down the keywords and minimize the search faster. and using *. e.g. cent* will gives you century, centre or center in the search result. This also helps me to save time in my Final Year Project effectively.

Practical 1-2 Activity 3

Woohoo...!!! Got a 500SGD to spent on buying anything i like through the internet.
Although this is not the first time for me using internet to buy stuffs, I can choose a wide range of stuffs using the 500SGD. Without hesitation, I went to www.ebay.com to buy the stuff i wants. If i have 500 dollars, i would purchase this camera. My interest for taking photos started recently and i would love to own this camera for myself, a beginner. As a beginner photographer, a camera like this will do fine. Once you got the hang of taking good shots, then you will proceed to a higher end camera.

Feedbacks and rating is like our school record. If the transactions goes smoothly and the buyer received the items and is pleased with the item, he will gives you a positive feedback. And if the situation is different from the positive feedback, the buyer will gives a negative feedback. Therefore, usually the user will check on these feedbacks of the user that they are dealing with, how many negative and positive feedbacks they receive, If you receive too many negative feedbacks, the seller or buyer will need to think before dealing with you. This feedback system is let the other user judge you just like whether you are a hero or a crook.

Day 1 Journal

Hi! Everyone, I am Weihon and I am very new to blogging. As this is my very first blog, I would like to take this opportunity to wish a happy new year to everyone in my class and not forget the lecturer.

The subject i am taking in this block is called Effective Internet Research (EIR). Before the lesson start, a warm ice breaking sessions was introduced by all of us, taking note of everyone names, hobbies and interests.

And so, the day started out with an introduction to Internet resources. we were being exposed to different types of websites and search engines. And being taught of judging informations shown in the website. Reliable or not? How reliable it was? How do we ensure this website is reliable.

Off course the most importantly is the different types of internet resources. And also the different areas where we got our informations from. For example, wiki, forums, blogs and worldwideweb.

The lecturers even explain to us how internets was founded.... Quite interesting. Something related to war and tons of computer link or wired together to pass and share informations around. Not to forget the term "Podcasting". Many of us could not answer what does this term means as this question might come out in the class test soon. According to the lecturer notes, podcasting is a method of producing self-contained audio miniprograms that are distributed over the internet.

In fact, not only podcasting, We had to learn how worldwideweb come by and many more. THis is done in discussion with my group mates.

As this is the first day, many things needs to be done as we are still blunt from being a true blue internet researcher. And lots of discussions with my group mates. Post some of a few discussions here.
